HOW NZ'S BIGGEST AIRPORT IMPROVED FUEL SPILL RECOVERY PROCEDURES
Airports are usually very good at containing any fuel spills that occur. They happen from time to time and whilst some are small and more easily dealt with, larger spills can be more of a problem. Where airports often find the most difficulty is efficiently dealing with a fuel spill once they have managed to contain it.
Auckland International Airport had struggled with this problem and consequently sought advice from Kerrick. We designed and manufactured a purpose built unit, capable of the very rapid recovery of spilled fuel into a vacuum receival vessel that can then be taken away for either disposal or, in some instances for use in incinerator burners.
The Kerrick Airport Fuel Spill Recovery Unit was built in accordance with the NZ Tank Wagon Code and derives its motive force from a Diesel driven liquid ring vacuum pump which has its own cooling water reservoir. For safety reasons, the Diesel engine has a spark arrestor and strangler fitted to it.
The pickup is via a large “gulper” vacuum tool and conveyed through anti-static reinforced hosing to the 1200 litre capacity receival vessel. All of this is mounted on a twin axle covered trailer which is fitted with electronic brakes which can be controlled and adjusted from the cab of the towing vehicle.
This custom fuel spill recovery truck has been so successful that a second unit was commissioned and is now on call in the event of any spills at Christchurch International Airport.
