Kerrick was commissioned by New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) to build a specialist high pressure pumping system for maintenance use at their aluminium smelter in Southland. Maintenance is carried out by connecting a high pressure water jetting system to a digger, which is placed inside a potshell. The boom of the digger is fitted with high pressure nozzles and operated hydraulically to blast crust from the walls of the potshell.
The HPS1000 was the ideal pump to carry out such work. Manufactured by Hughes Pumps in the UK, this high pressure pump puts out 8700 psi with a flow of 64 l/min, which when coupled with two jet Barracuda surface preparation nozzles from Stoneage and powered by a 165 HP Perkins engine makes quick work of the crust build up.
